Five questions (apiece) for Maria Carola and Steven Steele Cawman

“Place: Two Photographic Interpretations” intertwines two distinct art shows at the Fairfield Arts Center. Featuring the work of Maria Carola and Steven Steele Cawman, the show takes two already strong exhibits and made them more interesting by alternating opposing perspectives  on the world.

I naturally had lots of questions Maria and Steven, and they were kind enough to humor me…

Q: How did the PLACE exhibit come together? Did you know Steven before?

Maria Carola: Steven and I met three years ago as volunteers at FAC. We had both moved [Read more...]

Read’s: Everything Gothic & Outrageous

“One must dare to be himself, however frightening or strange that self must be,” said poet May Sarton, and that comment is echoed in the announcement for the Read’s Artspace E.G.O. show next week.

“Everything Gothic & Outrageous” exhibit draws upon the “darker facets of creative inspiration” and showcases works that embrace themes of horror, destruction, mythology, mystery, provocation and emotion. This exhibition will attempt to captivate viewers with art that reflects the hidden, [Read more...]

Southport: Robert Bizinsky rediscovered

Southport Galleries and Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers have announced the world premiere exhibition of paintings by American artist, Robert H. (Hyman) Bizinsky [1915-1982]. This trove of never-before-seen, colorfully animated scenes of Paris and the French countryside, were painted en plein air post-War Paris thanks to the “golden age” of the G.I. Bill.

An Atlanta native and Army combat engineer, “Biz” Bizinky used this vocational opportunity to catch the tail end of the School of Paris, studying under the eminent painter, Achille Emile Othon Friesz, who was [Read more...]

Creature feature at City Lights: It’s the season for ‘Dark Carnival’

A “mind-numbing” collection of grotesque and eerie figures will form a “Dark Carnival,” a Mike Falcigno production at City Lights starting with a reception 5:30-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27. Art isn’t always pretty — and at times it’s downright disturbing. What better time of year to appreciate the latter?

I’ve been amazed by Falcigno’s work for years, and now he’s finally curating a show that reflects his vision, mounting a show that also highlights a baker’s dozen of contemporary artists who work in the same jugular vein.

Falcigno casts a generously wide net: Adam Dougherty (image pictured here), Julia Ambrose, Black Unicorn Studios, Rainer F. Engel, David Grant, Moses Jaen, Vanessa Pastore, Don Seipel, The Shiflett Bros., Jake Waldron and Joe Wilson are represented. The 13 artists come from far and wide, from Connecticut to Colorado to Germany.

Arrive in costume for a chance to win a personalized zombie portrait. If you dare. [Read more...]

Fernando, Franklin Street Works and Trisha Baga

Trisha Baga, Landmark Tower Clouds

Trisha Baga is in the Fernando exhibition at Franklin Street Works — a new contemporary art space and café in Stamford.  Baga, with fellow emerging artists Lukas Geronimas and Mads Lynnerup, created original projects for the not-for-profit space’s inaugural exhibition. On view through Nov, 13, the show includes videos, sculptures and installations by all three artists.

The artists will be at Franklin Street Works on October 22, from noon – 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 for an all-day “City Saturday” event that  makes it easier for people outside of Stamford to meet the artists, see the exhibition and enjoy the café. ‘Blue Houses’ at Delamar Southport

Jonas Wickman’s paintings will be unveiled Wednesday, Oct. 12 at the Delamar Southport. “Blue Houses” is presented in collaboration with Southport Galleries.

The Artisan restaurant at the hotel already sports beautiful murals of monumental flowers by the Swedish artist.

“I am primarily a muralist,” says Wickman. “These paintings are drawn from memories and aspects of myself slowly emerging through the haziness of time.”
