Why news designers should be in Denver this fall

The Denver Sheraton

I’ve spent some time now at the Downtown Sheraton Denver, site of this fall’s SND conference.

You’re going to like this place. The hotel is beautiful, beds are super-comfy, and the facilities appear well-suited to our conference. And it’s right downtown, [Read more...]

Newspapers today: Gorey front pages

Newspapers in Region 1 today took advantage at one last opportunity to ruin their readers’ breakfasts. [Read more...]

And now, let’s take a moment to ponder the importance of thoughtful photo selection…

Another new hire at Boston Globe

Knox

Luke Knox of the Arizona Republic is the new lead sports designer at the Boston Globe.

“Luke impressed all of us with strong eye, passion, and enthusiasm,” said Dan Zedek, the Globe’s design director.

Luke, a native Vermonter, starts June 22.

This is on the heels of another big hire. The Globe recently hired Martin Gee to oversee features design, including the covers of the Sunday Magazine.

Juggling front-page events and images

Is this the right image to use with all the devastation going on? Just askin.

Is it me or lately is it harder than ever to balance each day’s events on Page One?

A hotter-than-hell L

The “Hot L” layout has come and gone, and now it’s back with a vengeance and paid for by P.C. Richards!

A Baltimore original

The Apple blog posted this story yesterday, and I immediately commented that I thought they should keep this look all year long. The Baltimore Sun celebrated an off-year anniversary by resurrecting their original nameplate.

I’ve changed my mind. I think they should go back to it permanently. What a cool nameplate. Pretty edgy, even kinky. Suddenly the new flag looks a little too polished and bland.

I went back to our original nameplates at the group of dailies I work for, and none of them convey this strength or character. In fact, when we did our recent redesign, we pored through our archives looking for something iconic that represented our heritage. Nothing. Most papers started out in the 1800s looking pretty much the same.

Maybe someone will start a Facebook campaign to restore the original flag.

Our Go tab

I did this redesign following Frank Mina’s prototype for the Post. Daryn Rowley does daily art direction. The handsome new fonts allow us set headlines in a minimalist fashion, letting the art really pop. I love that lower-case g set in Zocalo Dislpay.

How nation/world figures in

We’re a local paper. We consider that our strength. So how does our nation/world presentation figure in? We’ve broken away from a conventional layout. Frank Mina of the San Francisco Chronicle came up with this.
